Backer Board Method

- It is not necessary to have your fireplace stone, rock, brick, etc. swallow up half your mantel when being installed. Instead of just securing the mantel right to the wall, add a 2 x 4, 2 x 6, or 2 x 8 to the back of  the mantel; whichever is appropriate for your particular application. You do this by bolting/securing  the "two by" to the back of the mantel with some nice long bolts (lag bolts) coming out the back of that "two by" and going through the wall studs; then getting tightly fastened with nuts to those wall studs. Do two bolts per stud, and go through as many studs as you can. We love stone, rocks, and brick, but it's just not necessary to have so much of  the mantel disappear when being surrounded by those products. We see it all the time.
